Russel is a spacer. He was born on ship and has lived most of his life hopping from planet to planet. He comes from an extended family of traders. His mother was ship’s pilot for the Talon’s Treasure, while his father was the ship engineer. One of his uncles was the captain. The entire ship was crewed by close family, including another uncle responsible for building and repairing tech, some older cousins that helped with cargo and security, his aunt who acted as the ship’s trading rep with various customers, and two younger siblings of his own that were still learning their own roles on the ship.
Russel learned his piloting from his mom. His life aboard ship also meant he was trained in basic ship functions, repair, and trading techniques. He was a quick learner, especially in the piloting. He picked up enough to pilot the ship himself once in a while, under his mother’s watchful eye.
Throughout his travel, he’s been to many planets, and met a lot of people. Mostly he’s been interested in traders, or in meeting other kids for brief play periods. His family had a reputation as neutral traders. They avoided taking any jobs that were explicitly for the rebels or the empire, and refused smuggling jobs. Apparently, however, their neutral attitude got on someone’s bad side.
Just a few weeks ago, the family had finished dealing with a merchant for new supplies and trade goods on Naboo. They sent Russel to grab the last box of supplies while they prepared the ship for departure. Flying out with his repulsor wings and mag-gloves to get the supplies, Russel was carrying them back when he saw the ship taking off without him. Russel dropped the supplies as he tried to run and fly after the ship, but he was far too slow and it was already gone.
He reported to the local authorities, trying to get contact with his parent’s ship and find out why they left. Investigation by the imperial authorities determined the landing pad was in disarray, with signs of a struggle around where the entryway to the ship had been. The ship had been allowed to depart because it had a logged flight plan and authorization for departure at that time, but the evidence the authorities uncovered indicated hijackers had taken the ship… and Russel’s family.
Bereft from his family, Russel has been in the hands of the authorities awaiting his fate for the last few weeks. Finally, someone paid the authorities enough to take him off their hands, and he was offered a chance to help find his family himself by joining the trade race as a pilot. Eager to find out what happened, and to get off the planet, Russel agreed to the mysterious sponsor’s request
